‘Daily Show’ takes on Alabama ruling equating fertilized eggs with children

“That’s right, the bar has been moved again,” Desi Lydec said Tuesday on “The Daily Show.” “From now on in Alabama, life begins when a man notices his first cousin is hot.”

As the Comedy Central program tackled a recent Alabama Supreme Court decision giving fertilized eggs the same legal status as children in civil cases, Lydec and fellow correspondent Ronny Chieng found plenty of absurdity to play with. Lydec also noted real-world worries that the ruling could disrupt use of in vitro fertilization techniques that many couples have relied upon to become parents.

“Just to clarify what’s happening here, tens of thousands of women have children using IVF every year,” said Lydec. “And since it’s not possible to do that without creating some excess embryos, the state of Alabama has now ruled that starting a family is basically murder. You know, pro-life.”

“Last time I checked, you’re not allowed to store kids in the freezer,” she said. “And yeah, I have checked, and now I’m on some kind of CPS watch list.”

Chieng weighed in from a supposed Alabama IVF clinic, brandishing a test tube. “Turns out, I’m a father now. That’s right, say hello to little Ronny Jr. Look, he’s got his dad’s eyes.”

“This is not a scam,” he said, in response to an accusation from Lydec. “This is a legal child in the state of Alabama. That means I get all the benefits of being a dad without having to be a dad. I get to claim you on my taxes, I get paternity leave, I can hang out in the McDonalds’s ball pit without getting hassled.”

Given the fact that the Alabama ruling came in a case that started with someone dropping frozen embryos in a Mobile hospital, it’s no great surprise what comes next. The whole segment can be found on YouTube. The full episode can be found at Comedy Central’s website.
